Joni shares that as Christians we are to show and tell to the world about Christ.

Hi friends, this is Joni Eareckson Tada and welcome to Joni and Friends. When I was a kid in elementary school, I loved it when it was my turn for “Show ‘n Tell.” I remember one time dragging in my daddy’s big bear rug. Yeah, it was an actual bear my father shot with a long bow when he was in Canada many years ago. This bear rug was stretched out on the wooden floor of our living room in front of our big fire place. I would love it when father would make a fire, pull up a chair, and read to us. My sisters and I would sprawl out on the bear rug and I used to lay my head on the raised head of the bear. All this to say, that when I brought this big rug into school, I also wore my Davy Crockett coonskin cap and told how my daddy had shot the bear with his long bow. You think I should have been born in frontier times – I don’t know.

Well, I could go on and on talking about other crazy things I brought into “Show ‘n Tell,” but suffice to say, each object, no matter how big or small, had a story. And you know, there is a verse in scripture which I call my “Show ‘n Tell” verse and, yes, the verse has quite a story.

It’s Colossians 1:24 and the apostle Paul writes, “I fill up in my flesh what is still lacking in regard to Christ's afflictions, for the sake of his body, which is the church.” Why does that remind me of “Show ‘n Tell” and what’s the story? Well, first, please don’t think it infers that the Lord didn’t finish the job, like something is lacking in what He did. No, Christ’s work is finished and Jesus said so. He died on the cross, paid for our sins, and released to us power to live a life that’s pleasing to God. Nothing’s lacking there!

But there is something which is not finished. And this is the “Show ‘n Tell” part. Because Jesus is not around in the flesh anymore, but we are. We are like advertisements, we’re like billboards, we are bear rugs, we’re telling a story about our Father in heaven. We are telling people about Christ’s death on the cross and we are showing people the power He gives to live lives pleasing to Him. And we “fill up what is lacking,” as it concerns Christ afflictions. We go out there and we take the hard knocks, we take the punches on the chin from the world, and we show the world that the other cheek really can be turned, we really do bless those who persecute us, we really are able to forgive seventy times seven. We show and tell that the cross can be carried, the burden can be borne, and the thorn of the flesh really can be accepted.

People don’t know this when they read about what the Lord did 2,000 years ago… they only know it when someone tells them and shows them that it’s true. When’s the last time you did a little Christian “Show ‘n Tell?” Because somewhere today, at some point, you can fill up what is lacking in regards to Christ afflictions. So be God's audio-visual aid in the flesh since Jesus is not walking here on earth right now. He isn’t, but you are. And please let others see that, yes, the cross can be carried… and be carried with grace, courage and a smile. “Show ‘n Tell” them that today! Friend, thanks so much for these special few minutes we’ve been able to share together and because this program is called Joni and Friends, please know that I would love to hear from you. So, drop me a line on Joni’s Corner at joniandfriends.org. Until next time, I’m Joni Eareckson Tada and you’re listening to Joni and Friends.
