For Mother's Day, Joni interviews Ruth Huffman, her secretary's mom.

Hi! This is Joni Eareckson Tada and with Mother's Day coming, I have a special mother to sing with, Ruth Huffman...

Joni:  Hi, Ruth!

Ruth:  Hi!

Joni:  Thanks for joining me with this song.

Ruth:  It's my pleasure

Joni:  Okay!  Let's sing it...

When we walk with the Lord, in the light of His Word

What a glory He sheds on our way.

While we do His good will, He abides with us still

And with all who will trust and obey.

Trust and obey for there's no other way

To be happy in Jesus, but to trust and obey.

Joni:  You know, I used to sing that all the time with my own mother, Lindy Eareckson, but she's home in heaven now which makes singing with someone else's mother always a treat, like my secretary, Francie, her mother Ruth Huffman; Ruth, thank you for coming in today.

Ruth:  Thank you for asking.

Joni:  Ruth, you know well when my mom was alive whenever she would visit Ken and me here in Southern California we always used to like to get together with your family for some singing.  Remember that?

Ruth:  Oh, that was a treasured time.

Joni:  And you know what?  I remember often we would sing "moon songs" and last night was a full moon.  I was thinking of you...

Joni and Ruth:  Carolina moon keep shining, shining on the one who waits for me.  (Joni - and let's see...) Shine on, shine on harvest moon ...

Joni:  You know what?  I think there are a lot of people who don't even know what we are singing... isn't that something?  It's a new generation, isn't it?

Ruth:  We need to remind them.

Joni:  You know, looking at your smile, Ruth, what keeps your spirit so bright?

Ruth:  Well, every day in my morning prayer I ask God to be with me in all things - good or bad, and keep me safe and hold me fast so I don't slip when things go wrong.

Joni:  You are how old now, may I ask you?

Ruth:  I'm 85.  And then I ask Him to share His joy with me and to give me a happy heart.  You know nothing pleases Him more than a happy heart.

Joni:  With Mother's Day coming up what will you be doing, what do you have planned, anything?

Ruth:  Well, nothing planned as yet this year.  Last year was about the most ideal Mother's Day as you can get.  My children know that I love the beach and the ocean so they planned a picnic at the beach for me and we got somebody there to take a picture and I have it on my refrigerator door and look at it all the time.

Joni:  What a creative, wonderful thing for your kids to do.  They knew you love the beach; they know you love full moons.  I have a feeling that maybe this Mother's Day there will still be a moon up; maybe they will do something with that...  how about singing in the backyard, looking at the moon.

Ruth:  That would be nice!

Joni:  Well, for mothers of your age, and I know there are a lot of women listening that are in their late 70's, 80's and how do your children best minister to you?  Maybe give some hints to some younger women out there who are ministering to their moms.

Ruth:  Well, I'll try.  It's a little hard to put that into words, but watching my children grow spiritually in the Lord and seeing how well they cope with other areas in their lives in a mature way and knowing most of all to ask God in prayer for his guidance through things, that's a comfort and blessing to me.

Joni:  You know, it's a wonderful thing, because it's good to know that if children want to please their elderly mothers, obey the Lord, right?  Well, Ruth I think we have given a few listeners one or two good ideas when it comes to celebrating Mother's Day this weekend.  After all, God calls us to honor our moms and dads that their days might be long in the land.  Ruth what an honor it has been to share this time with you.  God bless.

Ruth:  I loved it too.

Joni:  Now let's go sing!
