Pass It On

Joni encourages listeners to pass on blessings that they receive from the Lord.

"That's how it is with God's love once you've experienced it..."  (Don't you love that song?) "You spread His love to everyone, you want to pass it on."

Now I haven't sung that song in a long time, (it's an oldie, but a goodie!) but the truth behind it is as fresh today as it was when it was first written. We've just got to pass it on - just like the song says.

This marvelous truth is not just in a song, but it's in God's Word, as well. God will not allow us to keep for ourselves the blessings He showers upon us.

Take a look at the story of Abraham. You probably know this, in Genesis chapter 12, God announces His blessings to Abraham. He says, "I will make you into a great nation and I will bless you" (verse 2). But that's not all. Then He goes on to say, "I will make your name great and you will be a blessing. All the peoples on earth will be blessed through you." I just love that verse...

Because God did not expect Abraham to keep the blessings to himself. Abraham wasn't to hoard or stockpile one good thing God had given him. As far as God was concerned, Abraham was just one link in a long chain of blessings that He wanted to pass on to others.

How about you? Do you "pass it on?" Take a look at Second Corinthians chapter 1. The Apostle Paul says, "For just as the sufferings of Christ flow over into our lives, so also through Christ our comfort overflows. If we are distressed, it is for your comfort and salvation; if we are comforted, it is for your comfort, which produces in you patient endurance of the same sufferings we suffer. And our hope for you is firm, because we know that just as you share in our sufferings, so also you share in our comfort" (vs. 5-7).

Whether it's Abraham or the Apostle Paul, the lesson is the same, isn't it? God blesses us so that we might bless others. He comforts us so that we might, in turn, comfort others. Goodness, we even suffer not only for how it might benefit us through patience and endurance, but we suffer so that others may learn how to patiently endure by watching our examples.

In what way has God blessed you lately? Financially, emotionally, physically? Maybe giving you a new friend, new friends, many new friends or a larger house, or maybe honed your teaching gifts, given you an extra measure of joy, maybe a closer relationship with you spouse? Aren't God's blessings wonderful? Well, if you're tempted to hold them close, keep them tightly to yourself as you savor each special blessing. Don't you dare do that... today you better give the blessings away. Share your joy with another.  Because don't forget - you've got to pass it on.
