February Peace

Joni sings "Wonderful Peace" and shares how beneficial that humble quiet time before the Lord is.

Far away in the depths of my spirit tonight
Rolls a melody sweeter than psalm;
In celestial strains it unceasingly falls
O'er my soul like an infinite calm.

Peace, peace, wonderful peace,
Coming down from the Father above!
Sweep over my spirit forever, I pray
In fathomless billows of love!

When the cold rains of February drive you inside the house, it's time to heat a mug of cocoa and tuck your legs up in a cozy chair by a window. One of my favorite things to do on a dark February day is to sit by the bay window in my bedroom. And I'll sit there listening to the rain splatter against the glass. The backyard looks hazy. It feels good to be safe and warm inside. It even makes hot cocoa taste better doesn't it? A rainy day in February is the perfect time to just be quiet before the Lord.

We all need time to do that, don't we? A time for listening, for sitting still. A time to refrain from rushing into God's presence with a tumble of words. James writes about the need for quiet self-examination and deep humility before the Lord. When he writes in James 4: "Come near to God and he will come near to you... humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up" (James 4:8-10).

Sometimes when I make myself be quiet, be humble before the Lord, I can almost hear Jesus speak and say, "How's it going, Joni? How is your day going?" or I can hear Him say, "Did you see the way I encouraged you today with that letter from your friend back east? Wasn't that great?" Sometimes I will sense Jesus asking, "Joni, why didn't you trust me earlier this evening with that disappointing phone call?" I can almost feel his eyes fixed on mine, "Remember, Joni, you can trust me." I would not 'hear' those encouragements were it not for humbling myself, being still and being quiet before the Lord.

When we are serene before Him, there is no room for pride. No room for spiritual snobbery. It's not always easy to carve out time to be quiet, but God just may send a dull, gray, rainy February day your way to force you into a spiritual corner, to force you to be "still before the Lord." And discover His wonderful peace. To tell the truth, that's a warm, cozy place to be!
