Christmas is a time to bless the people in your life today, look forward to your home in heaven, and to worship the newborn king born in the distant past.

Christmas Day

Merry Christmas, friend, Merry Christmas! And to celebrate, let’s sing this together.

Hark, the herald angels sing
Glory to the newborn King
Peace on earth and mercy mild
God and sinner reconciled
Joyful all ye nations rise
Join the triumph of the skies
With the angelic hosts proclaim
Christ is born in Bethlehem
Hark, the herald angels sing
Glory to the newborn King.

Thanks for singing with me! And I hope that your heart is as full of joy as mine on this beautiful Christmas Day, because Christmas is a time for looking up. Looking up at a blanket of stars, looking with joy up into the night sky and dreaming of what it must have been like to see the Bethlehem star. Look up and marvel at the starry expanse. God came down from there!  God left His heaven in order to best love you. Christmas is the time for looking up and remembering that heaven is your home.

Christmas is also a time for looking down – searching into your heart, examining your ways, and thanking Him for His Holy Spirit which resides within you. Christmas is the time for looking down and recognizing the need to kindle anew your own lamp of love, so that its flame burns ever more brightly.

Christmas is a time for looking around. Sharing smiles with friends, gifts for those we love. Look around at the needs of the people God brings your way. Christmas is the time to be the hands of God, touching the hungry, the homeless, those who are lonely, and all those who need your love, His love.

But Christmas is also a time for looking ahead. A New Year is just around the corner, and it’s packed full of opportunities to witness for Jesus, and share His Gospel of peace. So, look ahead into 2016 and start dreaming. Plan and prepare. Be courageous! Be bold! The future is an open door ready for you to walk through.

But most of all, Christmas is a time for looking back. Do that today, would you? Look back reverently across the centuries to the stable in Bethlehem. Picture the scene. Enter the village. Inhale the crisp air. See your frosty breath and feel the crunch of the gravel as you walk the path toward the inn. Stop at its door and listen to the laughter inside. Now, step around the corner to the back of the inn and pause before the stable. Smell the fragrance of hay and straw. Let the warm glow of the stable lantern touch your face. Hear the cry of a tiny infant. Now wait and listen and hear the distant strains of singing angels.

Step inside the stable and marvel at what you see. Draw near and come close. This is the Lord of the universe come down to be with you. So, in your heart, kneel before your Lord. Come worship and adore Him, because Christmas is a time for looking at and worshipping our newborn King, the Lord Jesus. So from all of us at Joni and Friends, we say Merry Christmas on this most joy-filled day of all the year! God bless you and have a joy-filled day celebrating Jesus.
