A delightful poem magnifies God’s attributes beginning with each letter of the alphabet.

The ABCs of Christmas

Hi, I’m Joni Eareckson Tada and given that Christmas is right around the corner, I know you know this beautiful old hymn so sing it with me, would you?

O little town of Bethlehem
how still we see thee lie
Above thy deep and dreamless sleep
The silent stars go by.
Yet in thy dark street shineth
The everlasting light
The hopes and fears of all the years
Are met in thee tonight.

Isn’t it a beautiful arrangement? You know, I was singing this carol just this morning after someone sent me a Christmas poem. I sure do wish I knew who wrote it, but all I know is that it's called "The ABCs of Christmas." Something you’d share with the children in your life; and it starts off with A: Angels from the realms of glory telling of the Christmas story. ‘B’ stands for Bethlehem that beckons with joyful accord; come here and see and worship the Lord. ‘C’ stands for Christ who was born on Christmas Day, asleep in a manger, a bed made of hay.

‘D’ stands for divine and holy is his birth; angels give flight over all the earth. ’E’ is for  Everlasting Father, Lord of all, look with mercy and love on us all. ‘F’ is for “fear not”, said the angel long ago, “I bring good tidings to earth below.” ‘G’ stands for glory to the Son, we sing; Christ is our prophet, our priest and our King. ‘H’ is for heavenly hosts; their watch are keeping over the child so sweetly sleeping. The letter ‘I’, well, that stands for Immanuel, we sing thy praise; thou prince of life, thou fount of grace. ‘J’? That’s "Joy to the world" the Lord is come; born in a manger, God's only son. ‘K’ is for King that the prophets foretold, and now all men his love behold.

Well, I could go on with the alphabet but I think you get the point behind this fun, seasonal poem. It's just a Christmassy little thing to read to your children, or your grandkids: maybe at bedtime, or during family devotions, (how about that?) or around the fireplace or the Christmas tree; around the dinner table. These Christmas ABC's are a wonderful way to slowly and carefully and intentionally focus your thoughts on just why we celebrate Christmas, maybe something to read this Sunday when you open gifts. ABCDEFG, each letter stands for something of God’s glory. Hey, Christmas Day is right around the corner, so go to my radio page today at where you can download a copy of the poem. We are posting it with a Christmas design and it’s easy to print off, just in time for you to share it with the boys and girls in your life – again, you can download a copy of the poem by visiting It's the Christmas ABCs, with Jesus Christ at the center of it all. Merry Christmas!
