You Can't Hide an Ox

Nowadays, confession and repentance are thought to be private things – just between us and God.

Hi, I’m Joni Eareckson Tada. Nowadays, confession and repentance are thought to be private things—just between us and God. We’d rather our friends did not know our sinful habits. But it wasn’t that way in Old Testament times. Back then, when you were convicted of sin, you had to bring an ox before the priest. A man leading a big, lumbering ox through city streets couldn’t hide his sin or his need of repentance from the rest of God’s people. Anyone who saw his neighbor heading to the temple with an ox knew that guy had blown it—and blown it big time. James chapter 5 says, “…confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed.” So find a fellow believer with whom you can share not just the good stuff, but the ugly stuff... say, “I’ve specifically sinned, and here’s where.” Do this, James 5 says, and you will be healed.
