Purpose in Pain

Every once in a while, when pain piles on, I will find myself asking God why.

Hi, I’m Joni Eareckson Tada and sometimes, every once in a while when pain piles on, I will find myself asking God why. And it’s why I’m inspired by Amy Carmichael, the missionary to India who rescued children from temple prostitution. Amy took a fall during her time overseas in India and was bedridden for years. Those years were filled with pain, and she struggled to understand why. But listen to what she wrote. She said, “What if we knew that every stroke of pain or hour of weariness, or any other trial carried us a pulse-beat nearer [to some other hurting person], someone for whom prayer is especially needed? … [remember] God never wastes His children’s pain.” Amy was onto something there. So if you are weary or hurting, press on in prayer—your prayers will do a world of good for others. It is one good way God uses your pain.
