Old Habits Die Hard

When I was in the hospital, I’d regularly see a man come shuffling down the hallway with the aid of a walker.

Hi, I'm Joni Eareckson Tada, and when I was in the hospital, I’d regularly see a man come shuffling down the hallway with the aid of a walker. The day finally came when the surgeons replaced his diseased joints with new plastic ones. His lameness was cured. Yet for nearly a year after the successful surgery, the man continued to limp. I remember saying to a nurse that it was a shame his surgery didn’t take. “Oh, but it did take,” she said. “That man limps out of nothing but habit.” In the same way, we Christians sometimes sin out of habit. But God’s Word says we are to put off old habits and put on new habits of holiness. Friend, God replaced your diseased soul with a new heart. You're free to walk with the Lord and keep in step with the Spirit... with Jesus, there's no need to limp along.
