Don't Take the Bait

Hi, I’m Joni Eareckson Tada. My husband Ken is an expert fly fisherman. He loves meandering along a stream to find out which insects the fish are biting. Then he will take out his box of flies, and choose one that most closely resembles that insect. He tells me it’s all about fooling the fish. If he can present a fly that will entice a gullible trout; you know, bait that the fish will fall for, well… he has snagged himself a very unwise fish. And in a way, the devil is quite the fly fisherman. He looks into his box of temptations and he chooses one that he has seen us fall for in the past, and then presents it to us, quietly and stealthily. He’s hoping we'll be gullible and not see through his scheme. But first Peter chapter 5 says that the devil prowls, just like Ken prowls the banks of the stream searching for weak-minded fish. Oh friend, don’t be one of them. When it comes to temptation, swim the other way.
