Years ago when we started taking wheelchairs and Bibles into Eastern Europe...

Hi, I'm Joni Eareckson Tada. Years ago when we started taking wheelchairs and Bibles into Eastern Europe, we learned about some odd practices of the Orthodox church. One man who, after he received his wheelchair, looked up at the physical therapist and asked, “What do I owe you?” But she said, “Oh, sir, please... there is absolutely no charge involved. This is a gift, a blessing from God.” The man looked at her in shock and replied, “Ma’am, in my church, we normally have to pay for extra blessings.” It seems that this particular branch of the Orthodox Church required its parishioners to offer a stipend for a blessing. Our physical therapist replied with a smile, “Sir, the Bible says that every good and perfect gift comes down from the Father of Lights from whom there is no shadow of turning.” And I would add... no charge!
