Boiling Mad

Hi, I’m Joni Eareckson Tada. Have you ever been boiling mad? It’s an expression we often use to depict times when we feel like we’re filled with anger and we just have to explode. As if it’s something we need to release to just “blow of steam.” In fact, some counselors instruct you just grab a baseball bat and wallop a pillow and you’ll feel better. But the truth is: you won’t be better for it … That’s because anger is a moral act. It’s not a thing inside of you waiting to be released; it an expression of you when you allow sin to have its way (or when someone else’s sin offends you). It’s why Psalm 37 says, “Refrain from anger, and forsake wrath! Fret not yourself; it tends only to evil.” You see, the problem with when we respond in anger, we aren’t trusting in God’s sovereignty or in His work in us. So, please refrain from anger today. Because nothing about it will bring you good.
