Are You a Mary or a Martha?

Remember the story of Martha running around trying to serve dinner...

I’m Joni Eareckson Tada.  Remember the story of Martha running around trying to serve dinner while her sister Mary sat adoringly at Jesus’ feet?  The first time I read that I had to admit that I most resemble Martha — a little bit of the workaholic.  Even back in high school, I was known as a hard worker.  And back then, I felt a little guilty at church youth group when I saw those Mary types.  Maybe Jesus loved them more.  Maybe He preferred them over me.  But somewhere along the line, I drew comfort from John chapter 11 where it says, “Jesus loved Martha and her sister, Mary.”  That verse was wonderfully liberating.  Jesus loved both Mary and Martha – in short, I didn’t have to compete with anyone for Christ’s love.  Jesus loves those who both work in the kingdom and worship.  The challenge?  To be both a Mary and a Martha – working and worshipping together.
