Anniversary Visit to Carolyn

My dear friend Carolyn is dying of lung cancer. Hi, I’m Joni Eareckson Tada and for more than 22 years, Carolyn has packed my suitcases when I travel, plus helped me get up every Monday, Friday and Saturday morning. When doctors said there was nothing more they could do, Carolyn moved to Northern California to be with her daughter’s family. Knowing time was short, Ken and I went to visit her – it happened to be the day of our wedding anniversary. I sat by Carolyn’s bed , singing hymns and recounting all the many times she has helped me. We talked frankly, yet warmly about dying and heaven. That day, ours was a sweet goodbye. On the way home, Ken and I reflected that it was the most memorable anniversary ever. And isn't that the way life is. So like Ecclesiastes chapter 7 verse 2 where it says, "It is better to go to a house of mourning than to go to a house of feasting…." And that, friend, is a poignant reminder the next time you visit a friend who is dying.
