Adopting a child with a disabilityQ: My spouse and I have been praying about adopting a child with special needs. Any advice?

A: What a beautiful calling the Lord has placed on your lives! We learn throughout Scripture that God has a deep love for the fatherless (Deut. 14:29, Job 29:12, Psalm 68:5 James 1:27) and commands His followers to take special care of them. You are glorifying God and bringing Him great pleasure as you seek to reflect this aspect of God’s love! Meet the Hopson family in Episode 17 of Joni and Friends TV series. The Hopsons adopted six children, including some with special needs. In this episode, you will see a day in the life of this family, gleaning many powerful insights as you consider your own family’s journey. Please also consider volunteering at a Joni and Friends Family Retreat, where you will meet many families of children with disabilities and learn about both the challenges and blessings. There are many adoption support services available, such as The National Adoption Foundation, and National Adoption Center, as well as organizations which specialize in finding homes for children with disabilities (CHASK and The Philip Hayden Foundation). We also suggest you connect with your local county’s foster family agency. As many as 30 to 40 percent of children in the US foster care system have physical health problems. Many of these children are in need of their “forever” families. Whether you choose to foster or adopt, your local foster agencies work hard to connect you with all the resources available to your son or daughter with special needs.
