Joni at the microphone“While I can only imagine the disappointment of music writer Bruce Broughton and lyricist Dennis Spiegel in the rescinding of their Oscar nomination, it in no way detracts from either the song’s beauty or its message. I was humbled and honored to have been asked to sing it for the film, and was as surprised as anyone when I learned of the song’s nomination. I was grateful for the attention the nomination brought to this worthy song and the inspirational film behind it, as well as to the ongoing work of Joni and Friends to people affected by disabilities. The decision by the Academy to rescind the nomination may well bring even further attention, and I only hope it helps to further extend the message and impact of the song. Regarding the reasons for the nomination being rescinded, it is not my place to speculate as I have no insights into the workings of the entertainment industry. I was honored to be invited to sing the song and it will always be a treasured experience.”

We hear the term Social Justice all over the media these days. It’s posted in articles on Facebook. Tweets go out with links to heart-wrenching videos of starving children, pleading for donations. The news screams with people demanding social justice in the work place. Even our Federal Government bends under the pressure for social justice in our military. But with the many, loud voices that fight for our attention, how do we define and understand the underlying premise of this trending movement...

Joni Eareckson Tada is a Christian mouth-painter, a singer, writer, disability activist, and a quadriplegic. But how did she get here? What left her paralyzed? And how did she develop a faith in Christ and a passion to serve those in need? In this video, Joni opens up to share with you her life testimony—from her childhood, to her diving accident, to her faith in Jesus and His plans. So, please, take a few minutes and watch this short video. We pray that it will inspire and encourage you to hold onto Jeremiah 29:11, that says, “’For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the Lord, ‘plans to give you hope and a future.’” Because whatever your circumstance, God knows your needs—and your future! If you know someone who has a disability or illness, share this video with him or her, and remember: God’s plans are always good!

Growing Down book coverHave you ever felt like your faith is dying on the vine? As a lifelong Christian, Sarah tried everything she knew to grow holier and happier. But as a young mom laboring alongside her missionary husband in the Andes Mountains, she came to the painful realization that, in the face of hardship, her faith was shrinking. Be encouraged by Sarah’s story as she recounts how she came to complete dependence on God – and discovered that the only way to grow up in Christ is to grow down. Sarah Horner Wetzel’s Growing Down: God's Grace in Spite of Myself with foreword by Joni Eareckson Tada is now available in the Joni and Friends store. Order your copy today!

Joni and Friends 35th Anniversary logoWorldwide, one in every seven people lives with a disability. In many nations, these people and their families face crushing poverty, social stigma, and isolation. They lack so much – even wheelchairs. At Joni and Friends, we are keenly aware we must do all we can to reach the world’s disability community with the Gospel of Christ, and to serve them with practical help. That’s why, for 35 years, we have partnered with you to fulfill Christ’s mandate from Luke 14: to go out, find the disabled, the lame and the blind, and bring them in so that the Father’s house might be full. *Update: Oscar Nomination Rescinded

Oscar nominations were announced today and “Alone Yet Not Alone” is nominated for Best Original Song. I had the honor of singing this original song in the movie of the same name (the video includes scenes from the movie and video clips from my recording session). I hope you have a chance to see Alone Yet Not Alone when it comes to a theater near you – it’s a beautiful film with a strong Christian theme. By the way, I doubt I'll be performing the song at the Oscars, but please be praying that God’s purposes will be fulfilled when the global spotlight shines on this lovely song on March 2nd for all the world to see!
