Disability and Employment

disability and employment infographicOne in five Americans is affected by disability, and only 15.2% of people with a disability are employed. Although the best reason to hire someone with a disability is because he or she is qualified for the job, it’s important to realize the value of including employees with disability in your workplace. Encourage your place of work to consider these values when employing someone with a disability:
• Including qualified employees with disability in your workforce communicates a strong message of inclusion to your local community.

Jeremy climbing the wall with his dad's supportAgain this year, you’ve sent hundreds of families to Family Retreat. Listen as the Kim family shares their experience: “Family Retreat was indescribable! How do you convey God’s glory in human words? The first day, as we drove over the bridge into Family Retreat, a startling sight greeted us: about thirty Short Term Missionaries cheering wildly and waving handmade signs with our names on them. “Stunned, I rolled down the window, and three eager STMs stuck their heads in. ‘You must be the Kims! Which one is Jeremy? Which one is Justin? We’re SO excited you’re here!’ Our kids don’t get that kind of greeting often – especially Jeremy, who has autism. More often it’s, ‘Uh-oh. Put away the breakables. He’s here.’ “Enter the first wave of tears, the first of many throughout the week of Family Retreat. We arrived physically tired and emotionally fatigued. But at Family Retreat, we were overwhelmed by God’s love and His rest. Our family entered His...

As you may know, William Wilberforce was a very busy man: he was a British parliamentarian, Christian, philanthropist, and social activist. But what you may not know is that August 25th is William Wilberforce Day! William Wilberforce dedicated his life to making the Gospel real by fighting against injustice and the social ills of his time. As the psalms say, he "defended the rights of the weak and needy," and "spoke up on behalf of those who could speak for themselves.” And it is that same advocacy for the week and the needy that made Joni Eareckson Tada the 2012 recipient of the William Wilberforce Award. Would you like to see a video clip of Joni receiving her award? Then click here. And don’t forget to listen to Joni’s radio program highlighting the very special history and life of William Wilberforce.

beyond suffering courseHave you ever suffered physically, emotionally or spiritually and wondered why? Do you have family members or friends with disabilities and struggle to know what to say or how to act around them? People with disabilities are considered one of the world's largest under-represented groups and the church is largely unprepared for the burgeoning disabled population. One of the primary goals of the Beyond Suffering Course is to address this issue by preparing leaders in ministry, education, medicine and science to become involved in this life-changing ministry. Beyond Suffering is now being offered online in three formats through the Christian Institute on Disability: 1. A 16 Week Certificate Course (starting September 4, 2012), 2. An Independent Study Program, and 3. A 5 Day Training Seminar for students who have completed the Certificate Course and seek to become Certified Leaders of Beyond Suffering. Chan and LiOne wheelchair can change a whole family – because every wheelchair you send goes with your prayers. “I am a new Christian but my husband is not,” shared Chan, at our Wheels for the World outreach to China. Unable to walk since birth, Chan has been carried for 40 years – and for the last 20 years her devoted husband, Li, has been her only caregiver. Li watched intently as his wife’s wheelchair was custom fit by Wheels for the World therapists and mechanics. He couldn’t take his eyes off the wheelchair that will change both of their lives. He wiped away a tear that ran down his face. “May we share Joni’s story with you?” our team member asked. Li nodded and the beautiful story of blessing from brokenness was shared. The Gospel message of redemption and hope rang out. Chan nodded and smiled and sneaked a peek at her husband. He has never given his heart to Jesus, but today he saw God’s love for himself in your gift of a wheelchair. Chan’s...

For years I've been longing to create something personal and powerful to help people dealing with pain or deep discouragement, and now, I'm so glad I can offer two brand-new resources – one is a DVD/Bible study called How Can God Help You Deal with Chronic Pain, Disability & Illness; the other DVD/Bible study is God's Comfort When You Are Discouraged and Fear the Future. These videos are from an interview I did on The John Ankerberg Show with Dr. Michael Easley, professor emeritus of Moody Bible Institute (he has degenerative disc disorder). I'm convinced these excellent DVDs and Bible studies will help anyone wrestling with pain or discouragement. So if you are struggling with pain, or you know someone who needs encouragement, these DVDs and studies are for you, “For God hears the cry of the afflicted” (Psalm 10:17).

Ananda and Assemblyman Dorborkoe at a Wheels outreachAnanda is a vibrant young man, recently disabled in an accident. Hearing Joni’s story at a Wheels for the World outreach, his heart opened. “I’ve struggled to understand what will become of my life,” he shared. “Joni has inspired me to give myself to Christ – my future, my heart, my life. My hope is now in Him.” State Assemblyman Charles Dorborkoe brought Ananda and 20 other disabled people from his district to Joni and Friends’ outreach. Greg helps adjust Che's wheelchairRecently, Joni and Friends International Board Chairman Greg Wood packed his toolkit and served as a volunteer with Wheels for the World in China. Here, he shares his experience with you…

For many years, my wife Candy and I have longed to join a Wheels for the World team. While serving on the Joni and Friends International Board is immensely rewarding, we longed to wrap our arms around the ministry by going – and touching lives. So we joined the outreach to China. One day at the wheelchair distribution, I was asked to make a heel strap to support the left foot of 78-year-old Che, who recently had a stroke. I removed the footrest and went to work...
